![]() My mind is stronger, but my body is weaker. (Most babies roll over between 4-6 months.) but now I consider myself fragile. The day I was born I rolled over twice, back to back, shocking the medical staff. In my family we are mostly Rh negative and red hair is dominant. My mother who is O negative is allergic to Aloe vera and penicillin. I have anemia and am extraordinarily deathly allergic to many things including birth control pills, latex, spermicide, and “lifesaving” Benadryl which nearly killed me. My siblings and mother are Rh negative as well, they are O negative. My parents are also cousins a few times removed. My mother and my father originate from the Iberian regions of northern Spain. My great grandparents were first cousins and I am royal blooded on both sides of my family. I am Rh negative my blood type is AB negative. ![]() Are you a magnet for unusual occurrences? Wolf in Gucci Loafers by Tara Lain7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() He wants to dominate, yet release control to his mate. Robert was so sweet, but my heart belongs to Vy. Watching the two come together and pull apart had me cheering and cringing and wanting to shake each. What ensues is a romance with a push and pull between Robert's deeply human nature and Vy's own animal instincts. Vy is the Kuar of a flock of Hawk shifters and is knocked off his feet when he meets his mate Robert who is a bear shifter who never shifts. I did miss the snark and humor apparent in all of Mary's books, though fans of either or will love Control and use it as a gateway drug! I love the rich, complex hierarchy and wasn't disappointed with Vy's. Something I love about shifter books (well, good shifter books) is the backstory and the detailed pride/pack/flock. ![]() Every other chapter? Different characters? How do you discuss the steamy scenes? The final result was Control. ![]() ![]() I was so curious to see how a meshing of two different authors could work. As most people know, I'm a die-hard Mary Calmes fan, and I adored Cardeno C's Wake Me Up Inside. My take: This was an interesting book to read. And bonus! The authors are sharing their takes on each other's books. Here are my reviews of Control by Mary Calmes and Cardeno C and Wolf in Gucci Loafers by Tara Lain. This week we have three authors with awesome shifter releases (yum!). ![]() ![]() Three principal themes characterize Klarman's narrative. Klarman's narrative features colorful characters and riveting stories, such as the rebellion by debtor farmers in Massachusetts that contributed enormously to the Constitution's creation, George Washington's agonized deliberations over whether to attend the Philadelphia convention, Patrick Henry's demagogic efforts to defeat ratification in Virginia, and the political machinations of Alexander Hamilton and John Jay at the New York ratifying convention that produced an improbable victory for ratification. Klarman's The Framers' Coup: The Making of the United States Constitution fills that void. ![]() Based on prodigious research and told largely through participants' voices, Michael J. Indeed, until now, nobody has written a comprehensive history of the Constitution's making. Most Americans revere their Constitution yet know relatively little about its origins.
After Cooling by Eric Dean Wilson7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Wilson is at heart an essayist, looking far and wide to tease out what particular forces in American culture-in capitalism, in systemic racism, in our values-combined to lead us into the Freon crisis and then out. As he traces the refrigerant’s life span from its invention in the 1920s-when it was hailed as a miracle of scientific progress-to efforts in the 1980s to ban the chemical (and the resulting political backlash), Wilson finds himself on a journey through the American heartland, trailing a man who buys up old tanks of Freon stockpiled in attics and basements to destroy what remains of the chemical before it can do further harm. In After Cooling, Eric Dean Wilson braids together air-conditioning history, climate science, road trips, and philosophy to tell the story of the birth, life, and afterlife of Freon, the refrigerant that ripped a hole larger than the continental United States in the ozone layer. This “ambitious delightful” ( The New York Times) work of literary nonfiction interweaves the science and history of the powerful refrigerant (and dangerous greenhouse gas) Freon with a haunting meditation on how to live meaningfully and morally in a rapidly heating world. ![]() The sorrow and the bliss7/4/2023 ![]() I related too much to some of Martha’s ‘tendencies’ – how depressing she finds hotel restaurants, her refusal to buy a book because of not wanting to own something with a cover that shade of yellow – how disconcerting she found the idea of wanting to buy something from Accessorize – of someone longing for something ‘so simple it could be outlined in pencil.’ ![]() I had to put it down at times due to the waves of emotions that confused me having not cried for some time since I switched to an SSRI that actually works. ![]() I was left with the same ‘inexplicable’ grief the narrator feels when she sees adults eating ice cream in public. To me, each small excerpt of this story reads like poetry – the end lines of each poignant and pithy paragraph resonate on an emotional level you can’t quite place as a result of the way she writes about the small details and interactions of this character and her family. Similar two star reviews on Amazon have complained that Meg Mason’s third novel, Sorrow and Bliss reads like a psychiatric assessment but as a psychiatrist I have to disagree. ![]() Why do people who give 1 star Amazon reviews for books that feature a depressed narrator always complain primarily about them being self-indulgent? ![]() ![]() Overall, I would like to rate the book as 4.5 out of 5. The honor of achieving that completeness has been left for the devourers of literature. All in all, it is safe to say that the author has shared a tremendous world within him, by sharing ‘Equations of a Being’, knowing well enough that this world was incomplete or maybe was on the verge of completeness. This is a book which should be read in one go because it‚Äôs rather interesting and so interesting that in spite of not being a lucrative fiction, it holds much of the thing called charm. So, naturally, I’m really eager to get my hands on this one! (I mean, I was since the day I finished The Kiss of Deception!) This one sounds like the stakes have been raised and it promises a lot more action than the previous book. Well, when I reviewed the first book back in June, I pretty much raved about how good it was. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country… and her own destiny. Now that she lives amongst them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: there’s Rafe, who lied to Lia, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be barbarians. ![]() ![]() Desperate to save her life, Lia’s erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar’s interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.
