What is exceptional about the book is the storytelling, completely original. The book’s plot is relatively simple: a couple of ex-lovers make an amoral gamble to corrupt good people, but in fact, there is a personal vendetta leading to the tragedy. With precision and boldness, the book spoke of romances, betrayals, and scandals in the French court, the symbol of decadence and opulence that would come to an end violently only seven years later. ![]() Although it is a work of fiction, it could be what is now called historical fiction. Les Liaisons dangereuses, Dangerous Liaisons, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, was first published 240 years ago, in four volumes, in March 1782. Some 7 years before the French Revolution, a publication caused a sensation in France. ![]()
